7th Ward North Claiborne Avenue and 1-10 Corridor Flood Investigation Study

image.png

The 7th Ward has long carried the burden of flooding caused by stormwater runoff from Interstate 10. In response, Healthy Community Services partnered with residents, designers, and water experts to lead a community-driven investigation of flooding conditions along the I-10 corridor. This study examined how water moves beneath and between the elevated highway, identified persistent ponding at key intersections, and documented opportunities to transform underutilized public land into functional green space.

The resulting vision centers nature-based solutions. Rain gardens, bioswales, dry creeks, tree planting, and permeable surfaces are strategically designed to capture and treat stormwater while reconnecting neighborhoods divided by infrastructure. The proposed green infrastructure system is designed to manage more than 1.7 million gallons of stormwater, significantly exceeding current city requirements, while creating safer, healthier, and more beautiful public spaces for residents.

This investigation lays the groundwork for a comprehensive reforestation and green infrastructure plan for the 7th Ward. It reflects the priorities and lived experience of residents and demonstrates how climate resilience, environmental health, and community stewardship can move forward together.
